The emergency department (ED) nurse practitioner—an advanced practice role—delivers primary care in the ED. He or she could treat common urgent and nonemergency medical conditions in collaboration with the ED attending physician.
**EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
RN preparation, nurse practitioner (NP) certification, and a Master of Science in Nursing are required. Previous experience in ER or critical care nursing is often required for the position. Certification as an acute care NP is offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
**CORE COMPETENCIES/SKILLS NEEDED**
- Excellent analytical and communication skills
- Advanced training and education in the care of critically ill patients
- Ability to work under pressure and make quick, important clinical decisions
- Excellent management and organizational skills and ability to work with members of the health care team
- Strong computer skills, especially in the use of electronic health record/ documentation
