Career Overview

The emergency department (ED) nurse practitioner—an advanced practice role—delivers primary care in the ED. He or she could treat common urgent and nonemergency medical conditions in collaboration with the ED attending physician.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

RN preparation, nurse practitioner (NP) certification, and a Master of Science in Nursing are required. Previous experience in ER or critical care nursing is often required for the position. Certification as an acute care NP is offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
