Career Overview

Emergency department (ED) nurses specialize in trauma and critical care, working in environments that are specially equipped to manage emergency care in life-threatening circumstances. ED nurses are often on the front line of health care, as many persons use the ED as their primary source of care.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

RN preparation with 1 to 3 years of acute care experience is required. Although not required by all EDs, ED nurses are usually trained in advanced cardiac life support and pediatric advanced life support. Certification is available from the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing.
