A perioperative nurse is a member of a surgical team who provides care for a patient before, during, and immediately after the patient has experienced a surgical intervention.
**EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
RN preparation is required. Certification is available through the Association of Operating Room Nurses or from the Competency and Credentialing Institute.
**CORE COMPETENCIES/SKILLS NEEDED**
- Knowledge and skills needed to assist in preparing and operating the technological
tools involved in new surgical techniques now available (e.g., lighter fiberoptic scopes/lenses and video monitors)
- Skill in providing comfort to the patient
- Skill in assisting the anesthetic caregivers
- Respect for cultural diversity, patients’ rights, privacy, and confidentiality
- Team skills for interactions with surgeons, surgical technologists, other nurses, anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, pathologists, radiologists, perfusionists,
support assistant staff, and many other members of the health care team
- Skill in facilitating patient advocacy
- Excellent basic nursing skills in observation and assessment
