Career Overview

Rehabilitation nursing is a specialty practice area that involves care of individuals with altered functional ability and altered lifestyle. Rehabilitation nurses begin to work with injured or ill individuals and their families soon after a disabling injury or
chronic illness strikes, and they continue to provide support after these individuals go home or return to work or school. The goal of rehabilitation nursing is to assist individuals with disabilities and chronic illness in the restoration, maintenance, and promotion of optimal health. Rehabilitation nursing practice occurs in many settings and involves a variety of roles. Most opportunities exist in hospitals (including specialty hospitals), long-term care facilities, and free-standing facilities.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

RN preparation is required. An RN with at least 2 years of practice in rehabilitation nursing can earn distinction as a certified rehabilitation registered nurse (CRRN) by successfully completing an examination that validates expertise. Likewise, an RN with a CRRN and a master’s degree or doctorate in nursing can earn certification as a CRRN-advanced.

  • Skill in team management acting as multisystem integrators and team leaders, working with physicians, therapists, and others to solve problems and promote patients’ maximal independence
  • Ability to work with others to adapt ongoing care to the resources available, which distinguishes the practice of rehabilitation nursing
  • Goal-orientedness and focus on helping patients return to optimal functionality
  • Ability to provide holistic care to meet patients’ medical, vocational, educational, environmental, and spiritual needs
  • Ability to function not only as caregivers but also as coordinators, collaborators, counselors, and case managers
